Posted February 16, 2018 07:02:13After a man attacked a pregnant woman in Liverpool on New Year Eve, he was stabbed to death.
A police investigation is continuing after the man, who has not been named, was found stabbed in the back by another man in his 20s, in a busy part of the city.
His death was described as “unprecedented” by local authorities and is being treated as a homicide.
In a statement, the city’s coroner, Fiona Kelly, said the incident had “shocked” the community and highlighted “a lack of understanding” about the need to report attacks and to ensure “a safe, healthy environment”.
“I would like to pay tribute to the victims’ families, friends and colleagues,” she said.
“The events of the New Year were truly frightening and left many with a terrible sense of loss and anxiety.”
In the short time since the attack, the public have been able to learn about the man’s life and death and have a clear picture of his death.
“I have heard from the people of Liverpool, and the wider Liverpool community, that they want to ensure that this tragedy is never repeated and the city is safe for all.”
In a further statement, a spokesperson for the Royal Liverpool Children’s Hospital said the hospital would not be providing any additional details about the patient.
“This case is being investigated by the police and is now being treated by our colleagues at the Royal Children’s Hospitals and the Crown Prosecution Service,” the statement said.
Police are treating the stabbing as a murder and said they were investigating whether the incident was connected to other violent crimes.
A coroner’s inquest into the man has been scheduled for next month.
